PostSubject: Baby bunny   Tue 17 Apr 2012, 10:50 am

My boyfriend found a tiny baby bunny at his work today hiding under some wooden pellets. so he brought it home and now I would like to try and look after it - as they are a pest in Australia I am not allowed to release it into the wild so I will either have to keep it or have it PTS.

I have no idea what im doing. I looked at a website and decided it is probably about 2-3 weeks old. I'm currently surfing the internet to try and suss out what to feed it - whether I should be giving it milk or solids or both! I've never done anything like this before, hopefully the little fluff ball survives. and hopefully Russell doesn't want to eat her (I think its a her - tried to sex it following some instructions on the net)

PostSubject: Re: Baby bunny   Thu 19 Apr 2012, 1:54 am

she went really well her first night in a little box and blanket, then I went out in the morning to buy some things (food, an eyedropper to feed her milk) etc. and she was really perky and eating and doing great.
but I got her out this morning and she seems weak :( she is sleeping all the time and not trying to fight when I move her... I hope she is ok, I think maybe I should be giving her kitten replacement milk instead of cows milk (although I had read it was ok)

aaargh I don't want her to die but she is so smaaallll!

Aww hope the little one makes it.

Would a wild life hospital not help you with them being pests?

There is a member called Angel who hand reared some of her bunnies from birth. I have been searching the posts but can only find where she mentions from 3 weeks on. I was hoping to find her original post which explained what she was doing and what she fed them in the hope it may help you as she is an experienced bunny breder

she's great! putting on weight... well we weighed her when we got her and she was 100grams and then over two days she went down to 88grams and now she is back to 100! yay!

but she is going strong, doesn't seem to want milk from me anymore but I put it in a jar lid in her box and she laps it up, so i have watered it down a bit for her.

I think we'll have a successful pet bunny on our hands now I am going to have to buy a hutch!

little bunny not doing well today... she has gone strong for a week! she has been putting on weight and now something is wrong.
she is all wobbly when she walks, and she hasn't eaten anything, and she hasn't pood or weed (all night)
usually I wake up to find her whole box is trashed with food strewn all over and crap every where... so I'm guessing she is constipated.

I also wiped her bottom with some warm water and cotton wool (says to do that on a website to stimulate toileting) and there was like... bits of wee sort of crystalised like jelly... not sure what that means :S

might call a vet see what they think.

She died...

I went out with mum for a bit after giving her pineapple juice recommended online... came home and she was laying on her side gasping and hardly moving :( I cried and cried because I didn't know what to do and the poor thing looked in so much pain and she was half dead.

mum took her home... to, I suppose put her out of her misery crying

I really am crying my eyes hurt from crying...
I feel silly, but it was just so awful to see how it ended for her. she was obviously suffering in those last few hours. I just hope that it wasn't something I had done wrong to make her end up that way. I feel awful.

You're not silly - I cried for days when I had to have Ixxy pts. Ixxy was the rat which I'd re-homed because he was being neglected & the people who had him were just going to 'let him go outside', even though he was disabled as a result of their negelect!!! banghead

I only had him for 6 months & he was hard work because he had loads of health problems due to not being properly looked after by his previous owners.

I was gutted, too, when he died.

A little life is still a life. It's still sad when it ends.

I doubt you did anything wrong - it could be something which would have happened no matter what you did, such as an underlying health problem etc. Also, you were in a difficult position as a result of the 'pest' status of rabbits, it'd be much easier here - you could have just taken her to the vet & got support & advice.

Please don't blame yourself (I know that's easier said than done!) & don't feel silly for grieving. xxx

:) thanks Sue.
I'm sorry about Ixxy, so sad how people treat some animals as 'lesser' things. although I guess most people do on some level (e/g smacking a mosquito) but yes. some people think I'm silly for caring so much... and sometimes that makes me feel silly too.

have fun hopping around in bunny heaven stitch!

Oddly Meg - your comment about hedgehogs (love 'em, they're sooo cute!) just reminded me - years ago we found a baby hedgehog & followed all the advice for rearing him & he seemed to be doing really well for a couple of weeks. Then he suddenly deteriorated rapidly & died within a few hours.

When we described what had happened to a vet he said it was probably some form of encephalitis & there was absolutely nothing we could have done. xx
