So if tomorrow you woke up and life offered the perfect opportunity to get another Staffy...would you ..

Look for a dog in your specific favourite colour / colours ..or would you wait for your heart to spot the "right" dog who jumped out at you regardless of colour etc.

I think I'd have to go for a youngster as with four I don't really have time for a dog with 'problems'.

have to say would like another pied staffy spinner smile

At the rescue center I always advise people looking for a dog to pretty much ignore appearance, they might have this companion for 15 years so getting the perfect fit for their family is far more important than getting a good looking dog which doesn't fit. It's not fair on your family or the dog.

remember, you don't chose your best and close human friends on their looks, so why chose your best canine friend for his looks?

I'd do what I did with Midge & Bertie & take the dog which came along by chance & was really in need of a home. I didn't choose either of them.

With Midge, via a rescue, we reserved the last bitch from a litter which came from an abandoned pregnant bitch some friends found tied to a railing in a car park. We could have ended up with the mum & would have been perfectly happy with her.

Bertie desperately needed a home & we were in a position to offer him one.

That said, I would be unlikely to have dog smaller than a staffy.

Although if Bertie had the choice I think he'd want to share his life with a patterdale or jrt or yorkie. He loves small feisty dogs & his best mate is a yorkie called Jack who is very, very feisty & really gives Bertie a great play fight! So, so cute! lol

Reading this back, I'm now worried Adam's going to think my way of 'choosing' a dog is really irresponsible! oops

OOOH - I'd also love to re-home an older dog. spinner smile

I would just see what captured my heart at the shelter

Our first three were all rescues and colour, age or sex did not come into it. With Reuben it was his age as we were lookinng for a younger dog that could adapt to Chloe

In the future I would opt for an older Staffy too - like Linda I'll need a dog I can keep up with lol!

Colour, looks etc wouldn't matter but if I was honest for no particular reason I can explain - I feel I'd be inclined towards a female.

Sex would only come into it if I already had an existing dog as I would always go for the opposite sex.

I dont know if this is common elsewhere but at our local shelter I would say 90% of the Staffies and staffie crosses brought in are male

I'd visit lots of rescues with Quattro for him to search for his new friend. As long as they got on well and it was another staffie I wouldn't care what age, colour etc

90% Jo? wow, makes me wonder why the females aren't being dumped.....breeding springs to mind.

We usually run at about 2 thirds male, 1 thirds female with the Staffs. We've got around 35 in at the moment.

Maybe it is because we have a smaller shelter. We have had numerous staffies and staffie crosses in over the last 12 months and I only recall 2 females.
The shelter only holds about 15 dogs at any one time and when I last went up a third were staffies (all male)

Jo I'd noticed this as well when looking at rescue sites & also thought it must be to do with breeding

Once they are in rescue I wonder is it harder to home males ?

Do they suffer more from the bad press perhaps do people incorrectly percieve the male of the breed to be more likely to be difficult to train etc.

I think breeding could be a factor in more males being handed in or dumped than females .

I have only ever had female dogs, apart from one JRT male, he was lovely and I would say just as affectionate as the females that I have had, all my dogs have been rescue apart from Cassie.

Bertie's my first male, after 3 bitches. They were all very affectionate dogs but be honest he's more affectionate than the 3 of them put together!

I seem to spend my whole time trying to fight off his wildly enthusiastic snogging lol or having to shift him cos he's cut off my blood supply by insisting on draping himself over me.

When I have a bath he either follows me in & sits & stares at me (until he falls asleep, anyway) or he curlsup in front of the bathroom door.

He's only ever so slightly less affectionate with Steve & his dad. spinner smile

Either sex for me and I'd probably get one of both as I'd been keen to re-home rescues again x

I would never have another staffy pup BY CHOICE. I would like to take on an older dog, not only because my Buddy likes older dogs, more than young bouncy dogs, but because they are overlooked alot.

I would have a british bulldog pup tomorrow but its not likely to happen lol.

There is a beautiful male staffy stuck in a rescue - one of his front legs is a deformed stump :(( & I'd love to be able to offer him a home but don't think Bertie'd be too chuffed (he'd prefer a jrt or patterdale etc) & a rescue wouldn't re-home to us. cry2 but if I could...
