PostSubject: Devastating news for my friend and her Staffie :-(   Wed 31 Oct 2012, 6:36 pm

Hi all,

A friend of mine has just lost her Staffie very suddenly in devastating circumstances.

Max is 7 years old, he was always treated to a ham bone from the pet shop when a Liverpool match was on.

Only this time my friend woke up Monday morning to find him vomiting blood, she rushed him into the vets who hooked him up to all sorts to keep him stable and shards of bone started to pass through.

They kept him in overnight and she visited him and said he was happy to see her and wagged his tail despite being poorly and the vets seemed to be happy with his progress, however in the morning her husband got a call to say Max had slipped away in the night.

She is absolutely devastated, confused, angry, shocked! She had no idea these large bones sold in pet stores could be so dangerous and has given them to Max for years.

I have never ever fed cooked bones, raw every single time for me and i do allow mine the filled white bones but i needed to share this in case any of you do feed the large roasted bones that every pet shop sells. NEVER EVER FEED THEM.

RIP Max you beautiful boy, run free at rainbow bridge.

I never feed cooked bones either. Not from the pet shops or my local butcher. Raw for me every time x

her Facebook status at the moment is "how can giving a dog a bone cause so much heartache".

I am devastated for her, these bones should not be sold as treats for dogs :-(

they aren't raw, they are roasted i think.
they are pretty big and i don't know if it was this particular brand but somethin similar to this:

http://www.petplanet.co.uk/product.asp?dept_id=465&pf_id=50324

why are these sold? is it for dogs that would kick and gnaw them not crunch through them like a Staffie could?

These are what they had in home bargains. No idea Zoe, only ever had staffies but I would imagine all biggish dogs may be able to chew through them. To be honest I cant beleive cooked bones have not been banned

What an awful thing to happen.

RIP Max.

If it wasn't for forums like this I would have no idea how dangerous cooked bones can be for dogs.
