I acquired a hamster, long story. He seems okay, he was living with 3 other hamsters and is now alone, should I be looking into maybe another hamster (sorry I'm so used to just having rats)

He also has this lump on his back

Anyone had one similar on theirs? I'm going to get him in at a vets tomorrow.

He seems okay, a bit nervous but is lettin me handle just fine.

So, meet Bertie

Hello Bertie. Sorry Saz I have no idea with hamsters as I have never owned one. Something in the back of my mind is thinking they are solitary?

I have only had gerbils and chinchillas in the past and always kept more than one

Apparently he's a Syrian hamster and there supposed to be kept alone anyway. So your right Jo :))

After posting this, me and the fella decided to just foster Bertie until my friend can take him in, when we got up and started the day yesterday we had no plans or thoughts of a new critter being in the house. But, nothing goes to plan does it?

Bertie this morning

And well, we're keeping him permanently now. We've both fallen a bit in love with him. So I need to go shopping to buy a cage

Have a look on FB there are a few pets for sale sites that may have one cheap. I think they may have had one in the sale section at jolleyes at weekend, just on the opposite side of the tills

Awww what a cutie...

 Bertie...

Bertie looks like my daughter's first hamster...long haired...

Syrian hamsters should be homed individually has they will fight as they grow older...

Also try give him some raw carrot/vegetables or hang a chew stick in his cage...their teeth are constantly growing...1 of my daughter's hamsters had to have her teeth cut under anaesethetic as they got too long...

My daughter has hamsters but never ever seen a lump like that...may be worth popping him to the vets...you may not need an appointment, maybe the veterinary nurse could tell you what it is??? Sadly there is not a lot the vets can do for hamsters

My daughter's hamster escaped from her cage one day, opened her bedroom door that evening when she went to bed and the hamster was on the floor, unfortunately the dogs noticed it before we did, so with bit of a fight we grabbed the dogs and then it was a case of locating the hamster, when we found her she was dragging her back leg so the following morning as soon as the vet opened we made an appointment and took her over, vet believes she fractured her leg as she fell to the floor after escaping her cage (her cage is up on top of some bedroom drawers), we were told there was basically nothing that could be done so bring her back home, stop her from being able to climb so that she rests the leg and see how she goes, that was a few months ago and I'm pleased to say she is fine, she's running around, climbing round her 3 storey cage quite happily.

The last hamster, (since deceased), we believed to be female, we found a lump on her back end one day, took her over the vet to be told it was not a girl after all, it was a boy, now that was embarrassing lol

Thanks for the reply Wendy, I've got in touch with some ladies who know a lot about Syrians the lump has gone down the vet said he thought it was an abcess and has antibiotics. I've also gotten a long lost of foods they can have which is pinned to my kitchen cupboard. He's getting very active, but will freeze as soon as one of the dogs move. I had him out or over an hour the other day, Sam walked past to go get a drink an he wouldn't move for an hour :( the rats aren't bothered by the dogs if the dogs hassled tthem I'm sure they'd happily take the dogs on! But the hamsters previous owner would wind there staffie by putting the hamster on the floor, leashing the dog and letting the dog get inches from it :( I was suppose to be picking Bertie and his son up but his son sadly died from a broken back before I got there.

Awww sorry to hear about Bertie's son

Sounds like you got him out in good time...I do not understand the mentality of some people...poor hamster must've been petrified seeing a dog snarling at it...

My daughter's hamster (Cyrus) at night when going to bed will quite often stand at the front end of her cage on her back legs and just stay there perfectly still with her front paws on her chest has if she's praying lol ... she is soooo cute

Apparently its quite easy to sex an hamster Jan so lord knows how we happened to get a male that should have been a female...when my daughter brung Millie down to me and asked me what the lump was I did'nt even consider that she was an he...that was soooo embarrassing at the vets that day lol

This is Millie...the girl that turned out to be a boy...lol...she was a long haired Syrian...she was over 3 and half years old when she passed away...

This is Cyrus...this one is a girl...she is a short haired Syrian

We have Cyrus in this cage...hence why we had to block her from climbing when she fractured her leg...to this day we still don't know how she got out her cage but we have since strengthened the doors of the cage so it does'nt happen again...
