PostSubject: My dog is very lethargic   Sun 04 May 2014, 11:46 pm

Hi my 7 year old staffie Beau seems very lethargic at the moment, she sleeps a lot, gets tired more quickly on walks and seems a bit depressed.
We have no other pets so thought she might be lonely but when we have friends round with dogs she doesn't seem very interested, we have a dog walker. When we are at work and she has longer walks on our days off, she has put on some weight about 2-3 kilos we feed her a small bowl of dried biscuits and chicken breast twice a day which I was told is not excessive.
She recently went for her booster and the vet checked her over and all was fine, but I am worried about her, I haven't had a staffie before is this normal. Does she need another dog for company? Is this there nature? I hate seeing her down and don't know what to do. Any advice would be great thanks

Hello and welcome

How long have you had Beau? Has anything recently changed in routine, diet etc? Has it been very hot where you are, it could be the sun making her more tired. Does she drink plenty of water?

If the vet has recently checked her I wouldn't worry too much but there is no harm in taking her back to be checked again. Did you mention this to the vet?

Sorry for all the questions lol

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Can't really think of anything other than what Sel has already asked you. I am sure the vet would have done a check over, but you could always take Beau back if you are worried.

Has Beau got plenty of chew toys to play with?

Hi and Welcome.

If your pooch had become lethargic for you to notice and worry, then I would be inclined to pop her to the vets.

Could be something simple as just general tiredness due to warmer weather .
Or it could be a health issue such as thyroid eyc.

Either way I would pop her to vet tomorrow for a pooch mot.

Hope all is well and please keep us posted xx

Boosters can make a fog lethargic ad it's like a flu jab. They are given the virus so to speak so their immune system fights it.

Both my boys were lethargic for 2 days after their booster xx

2 tests you can carry out at home

1. Dehydration = gently pinch skin between thumb n finger and gently lift and release. The skin should snap back quickly this means pooch isn't dehydrated. But if skin takes a while to go back it's a sign if dehydration.

2. Gums, gums should be nice and pink and wet check this too xx

Great advice so far and I don't have anything to add other than you know your dog and if you are worried I would get her checked out at the vets. Let us know how she gets on

Hi Everyone
Thank you for all your advice. I have done the pinch test and checked Beau's gums and all seems fine there. I took her out early this morning when it was cooler and we had a lovely play in the park. I think she needs more stimulation. She isn't bothered about playing with other dogs that visit but loves playing with myself and my husband and I think we need to give her more play times. I am going out to buy her more toys tomorrow and hopefully she will perk up if not she will off to the vets. I will post a pic of her when I can work out how to do it as she is beautiful. X

Glad she was OK this morning, some dogs tolerate heat more than others. I try to get out early morning when it is cooler.

If she likes playtime with you the lots of times and a bit of one to one training will keep her mind focused. My boy loves 'find it' where I hide a treat under a cone in the house and he has to find it

Are you using a PC or a tablet? If using a PC you can upload a pic direct from your PC by clicking on the 13th icon along that looks like a floppy disc. If you are on a tablet then you would need to upload to a pic hosting site like photobucket and then copy the IMG code onto the text of your post. Let me know if you need any more help with pics
