PostSubject: Mizzie battling cancer   Fri 26 Jun 2015, 8:02 am

Mizzie is currently battling some very aggressive cancer, she has had one lump successfully removed but it has spread into her lymph glands in her neck and the lumps are growing fast. After some heated discussions with the vet (who I thought weren't moving fast enough) she is booked into Leahurst small animal hospital (which is one of the best in the country and thankfully only 20 minutes away) on Monday. So far it hasn't spread to her organs.

Cancer is something I understand but have little experience of in dogs, and it's generally not good stories.
Has anybody here had to deal with this and had a positive outcome?

Sorry to hear this Adam, I hope the hospital can get Mizzie sorted.

I've had a dog with cancer before but not like this. He had it in his eye which was promptly removed and only when he was very unwell some years later  did we realise he had 100s of tumours in his lungs. Sadly by the time we found this we were too late.

Have you caught it early do you know? I don't know much about dog cancer but I assume they can get treated and go into remission like we can.

We will be thinking of you on Monday, please let us know how you get on. Sounds like she will be in good hands at the hospital group hug

I am so sorry to read Mizzie' plyt.  I really want to post a positive story but, my rottie had cancer. His liver, kidneys, heart.... 3xs the size they should be.

Go get a 2nd opinion. Different vets approach a problem from different angles.

My hugs...I hope she is ok. She is so young. group hug

Thanks everyone,
the news isn't good really, she is on chemo therapy and will be for a few months. The specialist wasn't confident enough to go straight for surgery and cut the neck lumps out, apparently if you even miss a few mast cells they grow back at a much accelerated rate and make further surgery difficult.
We can only wait now and see how much of an effect the chemo has and how well she responds to it. But deep down I know the chances of beating this are very limited.

The vet was very impressed with her though, he said she was very strong, healthy and fantastic to work with. He wished every dog he dealt with was like her, so that was one nice bit of the day.

Mizzie is still doing well, a bit sleepy after her treatment but that's nothing out of the ordinary! But we'll need to keep a close eye on her from now on.

Things are actually looking very promising!  Having been told different things by different vets/surgeons/specialists etc we opted for the surgery after two doses of chemo halved the size of the main tumour and the second smaller tumour disappeared completely. The surgeon is sure they removed all of the cancerous cells from her neck. So we need to go back in two weeks for tests to see if there is any cancer left, (there only will be if it spread further before the op), so there might be a bit more chemo, but hopefully not!
The difference in the local vet work and the specialist's work was huge.
Mizzie, of course is completely fine in herself, like nothing has happened! She was at the animal hospital for 3 days and 2 nights and when we went to pick us up, she wandered over, said a quick hello then just sat and waited whilst everything was explained to us, bless her.

So finger crossed for the next set of tests!

Hi Lou, thanks for asking
We actually went back for a post op check up only yesterday with the specialist.
It's a tricky one to judge, the op went well, everything seems ok now but due to the nature of the cancer (very aggressive apparently) and the fact it had spread, she basically explained that the chances of Mizz being all clear were almost zero.
So we are doing 8 more doses of chemo (1 every 2 weeks) and will scan her after 4 or maybe after the 8. Ideally the chemo will mop up any remaining cancer cells, but realistically she explained that chemo has less and less affect so if any cancer cells are remaining they will just be suppressed by the chemo and will eventually kick off again.
From the little research I've done it does seem to take about 1 year for the cancer to come back in these sort of cases. So it's a long wait and see game now.

I also have added tumeric into Mizzies diet as there seems to be some good evidence (nothing solid) it does help reduce tumour growth. I had to mix it with coconut oil to help get it into her system but anything is worth a shot!

Anything is worth a shot Adam and if the turmeric only helps a little bit it all counts

I do hope the chemo gets rid of any of the remaining cells and she can finally be cancer free fingers crossed
