PostSubject: Reuben has been a little sh*te this morning   Sun 16 May 2010, 11:47 am

A few months ago Reuben started lunging at other dogs when on lead making the most god awful noise. We had a one to one with our trainer and she felt he was frustrated on the lead which could turn to aggression if we did not deal with it.
To deal with it whenever we saw another dog approach Reuben would go into the sit position and as long as he behaved he was given a treat, we then allowed the other dog to approach him if it was friendly. He was doing OK on this but had the odd slip up.

We then had another one to one and and progressed to walking past other dogs and every time Reuben looked at the dog and did not react he was rewarded, it was look, reward, look, reward. This works 95% of the time and from watching him when we see or meet other dogs I have realised he reacts when the other dog is looking at him so I know to distract him immediately if the other dog is staring intently.
Friday we went out with my friends dogs, we met another couple of dogs and he was OK with them and wanted to play. Saturday was much the same when we went to the park.

Today, that was another story! We went to the park and we met another male staffy, we have met before and walked with them a couple of times and they came to the same training class, however we have not seen him for about 6 months. However as soon as they got near each other Reuben was like a dog possessed and went for this dog, I pulled him back and made him sit and he sat very calmly so I rewarded him, then he went for it again so we decided to walk away from them as she is dealing with aggression issues with her dog.

Well he then decided he would lunge and snarl and growl at every dog we saw in the park, despite me trying to distract him with chicken. I then decided enough was enough and it was home time. As we were leaving the park I saw two old girls who we see every week with a doberman, we walked towards them and one of the old girls came over to see us and he was fine with her, the second old girl came over to see us, fine again. They all sat down whilst I gave them a bit of chicken and everything was fine. The doberman was very nervous and was stood behind its owners legs, Reuben then decided he would have ago at this dog and was lunging and snarling at it.
It was def time to come home then. I feel so fed up with him today, I know we all have set backs in training but today he was a blinking nightmare.

Oh dear, sounds like something freaked him out with the first dog and he was determined to be huffy today.

You have done such amazing work with Rueben, I am sure it is just a set back and an off day. Has he been ok with Chloe since you got back home?

I suppose the main thing is when you go out again, don't let him see you are apprehensive if you see another dog coming your way - hard to do, I know, as he has been a little monkey today.

Chloe is still in bed lazy mare. I am really calm about him meeting other dogs as I know I can always control him and am eager for him to meet them.

We have a new dog in class at training and for the last two weeks when we have met in the hallway he has lunged at it. As soon as we go into class and they are all off lead socialising he does not bat an eyelid.

Just wish they could talk sometimes

Persevere Jo we all have those days. Sometimes once they have been set off that is it. They are in that ''mode/zone'' and its hard to get them out of it.

Tomorrow is another day hun x

Is anyone elses dog temperamental in how they behave with other dogs?

Saturday we went for a walk and had a brilliant day but on the way home met two aggressive boxers. The owners pulled them to the side and as we walked past Reuben was terrible and was barking and lunging at them. They were staring at him quite intently which he does not like.

Yesterday we had a brilliant walk and we met three dogs and he was fine with them all and played with two of them, the other one a springer he does not normally like but as he had his tennis ball he was not interested, all this was whilst he was off lead - I only let him off once I saw he was OK with them.

Tonigt we met the local poodle. For some reason both mine hate this dog with a passion, however we have been working on this and for the last two meets we have done well and there was no reaction, we even sat across the road from it for 2 minutes and every time he looked and did not react he was rewarded. I really felt we were getting somewhere and then tonight the red mist came down again. We walked around the corner and the poodle was there and he went into the type of dog newspapers talk about. He was so aggresive I could not beleive it, he was lunging, snarling & barking and then of course the poodle reacted so he got worse.

I know it is work in progress and we will have good and bad days but I do wonder if he will forever be like this?

Jo you are doing so well and i am sure like has been said before there will be set backs and bad days ,
i dont know if its been asked before but can you remember what type of mood or feeling you was in when you went on the walk , or do you feel yourself a little tense when you see certain dogs ?

i also believe that some dogs do take an instant dislike to others and once that happens it cant be undone i may be wrong thats juts how i have felt through experience we had two fox terrier who hated pip now any other dog they were fab with minute pip came on the scene them dogs changed and nothing ever helped them , in the end we used to juts avoid them as much as we could

I always feel calm as I am keen for him to meet other dogs and work on his training. I have actively sought dogs out in the park to continue training on quiet days so I dont have any fear of anything as I am confident in dealing with his behaviour

Cody isn't like this so I can't offer any advice but I do have problems with Cody lunging at people. Not to attack, just to greet but he looks like he is charging at them with his big gob open and making the most awful noise. I got the halti and a few weeks later he had almost stopped and would walk past 95% of people without even looking at them.

Well today he was awful. I have not used the halti for a few days and he caught me off guard today and lunged at a man I didn't even see. He nearly pulled me off my feet and it took all my strengh to hold him back. I kept saying sorry, sorry, so sorry to the man who had screamed and run away oops

Tomorrow he is back on the halti blush

I want to take him along to try agility very soon but I dont know if they will allow him to take part knowing he can be temperamental. He is OK 95% of the time

dell has days when the devil gets in him.
theres some dogs he wont tolerate at all, and weve learned to give them a wide berth.
dell doesnt like being stared at and i try to break it even standing in front, i also try to distract with nibblys.
dell was how brock is now, friendly with all dogs, but has been bitten on his back end so often he turned and wont let a dog behind him now.
if dell loves another dog it can do no wrong, a neighbours laal yappy thing trys to bite him ( seriously ) and he couldnt care less, carries on playing with it.like hes winding it up, he never bites it back.
good luck jo but im sure youll hack it x
