ER is to be used for emergencies only and is different to the casual ‘come’

ER uses a special word that the dog, through training will associate with ‘I am going to stop what I am doing and rush over to whoever said that because I am going to get something VERY nice to eat’.

Pick a word that you do not use every day in your vocabulary so as not to confuse your dog. It does not matter what the word is as long as you can remember it in an emergency and it’s not used in their day to day life.

Use a very special treat for training because this is what will make ER work. Your dogs can only have this treat when they are training for ER so that they associate ER with this fab treat.

To start with go somewhere with a low distraction area and have someone hold your dog whilst you get some distance between you. Then with the special treat in your hand shout your dog and say the special word, you only say the word once. This way they don’t get it in their head that they can ignore you a couple of times before coming over. Be very enthusiastic, clap your hands, be very happy and get very excited as your dog comes running to you.

Once they get to you put the lead on your dog so they cannot run away then give them their special treat and praise them LOTS

Do this for several days or weeks until your dog is reliable with this word in low distraction areas. You then need to move onto the next level and have some one roll a ball in front of your dog or run in front of them. Always reward with the special treat and an abundance of praise. To up the distraction try ER whilst your dog is playing with some doggy friends. The higher the distraction and they still respond to the ER word the more firm it is in their mind

If your dog does not come, don’t repeat the word. Go to your dog and lure them with the treat to follow you to where you were originally calling them from. Once you get them there then let them have the special treat and again lots of praise

Once your dog is very responsive to the ER process you should practice it once a week for the rest of their life.

If you do need to use the ER process, the likelihood is that you will not have your special treat with you. You should give your dog whatever you have again with lots of praise and when you carry on with your training use the special treat so they still associate it with ER only

You never know when you will need this, hopefully never!
