i must add that if dell shows any aggession to any dog, i do tell him off which he doesnt like, and he seems to get upset that i ignore him and he doesnt get any treats after. i think he does it only when its too much for him to put up with.i do find if a dog snarls at him he snarls right back then i dont bollock him, which happens most of the time.
if any dog puts there head over him he goes nuts but i think its a dominant thing ?
good job were going to be in differant buildings jo x lol!

When our dogs don't like something it is so easy to be told 150 different ways to train them out of it. This just doesn't always work.

We have had issues and have had to change the way we deal with our dogs. Same as other people have said on here we now know their body language and if we need to we work round that.

I'm in agreement with the policy find what works for you and stick to it like glue. It helps us feel more confident with our dogs because we all know what we're doing and then once we have this balance back we can if and when us and the dogs are ready, work on gradually trying to sort out the problem.

We have never been 100% sure if our problem was nerves, dominance, anger fear or what. I do know that one of the biggest issues was that our dogs didn't see us as being in control and had no confidence in us.

The only thing I will say is that I am now a firm believer in what I see as the real principle behind being "pack leader" - we have to be in charge and in control of the situation and our dogs need to know we are going to manage it - otherwise we are forcing them to deal with it their way.

I hope everyone finds their way of managing their dogs issues and it works for you and your dog. fingers crossed

My trainer said that enzo thinks he has to protect me. So I am working on becoming pack leader.
We've made lots of changes around the house, put in placce house rules, rooms out of bounds, eating before him, make him move out of the way not step over him, not allowed on my bed unless I say etc etc.

That's how we started, we had to seperate ours very quickly because our problem was between our 2 girls, but it was spreading to other dogs and I couldn't walk them together.

We put up babygates, stopped them getting on the settees unless invited etc. They are now totally banned from our bed because this was the Queen Bees throne to them.
Once we accepted that you don't have to boss your dog about or do anything harsh it got easy. We just kept insisting that they followed our new rules until they accepted them. It was so frustating at times going over and over things but it made so much difference.

We don't want to be top dog we just want the girls to understand there are boundaries and that we look after them, not the other way round. They now both know they don't own us and the furniture and that we have routines that they have to follow.

The have also improved so much when out walking when they see other dogs, I was always nervous they would kick off all the time but I can manage all 3 again now and we have a better time.

We're stil learning and nothing is perfect but Keep at it - it is worth all the hard work in the end group hug

Hi

I agree with Denise and was also going to add - as much as socialise our pooches there are some instincts we just cannot break -

My boys went to socialisation for 2 years - doggy day creche etc - and even now if they were to meet another dog face to face (often males) there will be a few grumbles and growls - I do correct them and also try to prevent but if anyone dog squares or runs upto my boys they will react - most pooches will in my honest opinion.

Enzo on your profile is 2 years old and this is also a time of hormonal changes -

Try not to beat yourself honey - just try and recognise the signs when Enzo appears to be squaring up another dog - and try and correct

If its any concelation I reckon my boys would have done the same - I hate it when peeps allow their dogs no matter what breed to just charge up to mine when on lead -

Chin up honey - don't loose faith xx

Thank you.
I posted this a few months back when it first started and since I have read probably every article going about dog aggression lol so I'm a bit more clued up now.
And I have had time to get used to his body language when he meets a dog so I understand it more now.
But still every walk I take him on is a training lesson and I will keep it up. Tonight I go to obediance lessons I go every thursday and he is doing so well.
But thanks for everyones support its nice to be able to talk about it with people that understand xx

Have had another nice day with Hoopy ... i know it ,ll be mixed from good and not so good ..... i know the signs when he is about to start so continuing with him focusing on me and not the other dog and prasing him when he is doing good .

I know he won,t get on with every dog .... just be nice to go for a walk and not have the carryons when he see,s / meets in with other dogs ... must say though most of the dogs he has met have all been off lead with there owners miles away from them .... and they come charging over and a few times i have panicked ..and know Hoopy must pick up on that .

4 times Hoopy has been attacked to by others ...so wonder if at times he panicks to !!

I feel bad for you and Hoopy, once you've had bad experiences it is so hard to not panic when you see another dog off the lead coming toward you.

It'll take time but I hope you do both get your full confidence back.

It really is a case of onwards and upwards and take it day by day. It does sound like you are winning through, though if you are managing to get his attention towards you.

I hope you all manage to sort the different issues.

It CAN be done as we had a few months of Kai being a bugger, but have now completely sorted it and we can walk round busy parks off lead all the time, plus flyball is a good way to socialise.

At flyball last night Kai had a wee play at the end with 9 other dogs (8 border collies and a labrador) with just one ball at one point he managed to bring it back somehow lol, Its things like this that really make you proud after you have dealt with issues.

i wouldnt have any issues if every one had there dogs under control, its the peeps who dont keep there dogs on lead and dont have control there-fore making the situation go around and around breaking dog after dogs temper and they cant see it.
i would hate for my dogs to attack there-fore keep them under control cant do it off lead so do it on lead.
another thing when ive ever seen dogs bite a puppy i believe that that dog should be muzzled as its only very nasty dogs that will attack a pup although having said that dell was attacked when he was very young but it didnt seem to be serious because hes a staffy.
i feel like hes got to be under more control because hes a staffy the times weve put him on lead and the un leaded dog takes a sly bite on the way past.
me and hubby often have words about it, why should he be a sitting target for any dog that cares to have a go.because hes a staffy i know.

We have designated dog beaches here in Newcastle and we have taken Sumo and Ruby. It is very interesting to watch when we enter......

We never let them off leash because Sumo's recall sucks and I would have to pick him up in Queensland ha ha

People immediately look at our dogs and go...oh shit! Sumo wouldn't hurt a bloody fly, but because he is a big boy...a true Staffy with loads of muscle people automatically think he is aggressive. Then you have the die hard staffy lovers who absolutely melt when they see them.

I most definitely think I have to be more careful...owning Staffies. I know what they would be capable off during a fight...I know they will not start one but will for sure finish it to defend themselves.

I know my dogs 100% and that is what it is all about. I do not know everybody elses dogs and that is why I do not let mine off leash in a public dog area. I know if they get in Ruby's face...she will show lip. I know if they go to Sumo...he would want to play Staffy way and to some people who do not understand...it can look a bit "extreme". People automatically think if there is a growl...there is aggression...well not in Staffy world...that means PLAYTIME!

I also know if there is a fight and Sumo is involved, but didn't start it...he will be the one paying for it...plastered all over the newspapers..."Another Staffy attacks helpless dog at Nobby's Beach!"

I make sure I ALWAYS have their ANKC paperwork, so just in case a Ranger comes by...I can prove they are purebred Staffordshire Bull Terriers, which are not a restricted or banned breed here in OZ....YET!!!
