PostSubject: gentle leader or canny collar   Thu 22 Jul 2010, 11:19 pm

I was going to get a gentle leader for Diesel but have just had a closer look at the canny collar and that looks a bit sturdier.

Has anyone tried both?

Diesel is quite a big boy (25kg) and he's very strong so unsure which would be better.

Looking at both the canny collar looks better quality and stronger than the gentle leader.
Also not sure whether i would prefer the lead underneath or behind his head?

the gentle leader you can use with a normal collar or half choke ( not that i like anything with that word in but i did use one for pip )
so if he pulls head out of one he still has the security of the collar ,
i had buffy on the gentle leader and her harness with two leads so if she escaped one the harness was still holding her
i have never used the canny collar so have no real idea how it works xx

It depends what you want to use it for. I have been loaned a canny collar in the past but never used it, my issue was not Reuben pulling on a lead it was him lunging at dogs.
The GL had better control over his face so as we approached the dog I could ensure he was not focused on the dog by turning him to face me.

I have heard good reports on both the GL and Canny Collar but a few grumbles about Haltis as they tend to ride up their face.

Im not a fan of Halti seen some nasty cuts near the eyes when they ride up.

Canny Collar everytime for me, especially with the bull breeds.

Hope you decide ok hun. x

I've not tried the canny collar but it looks very good.

Tried the halti but didn't like the fit of it.

Am now using the GL and it's brilliant and Cody doesn't try to take it off or wriggle free from it like he did with the halti.

Yeah with walking two dogs i don't fancy having to use two leads for at least one of them, I think i'll take him down to the local pet shop and ask to try both see if he will let me

Phoned my local pet shop but they don't stock them.

He reccomended the milton sspca.

I phoned them and they do stock them, so i will take Diesel down later to be properly fitted and they will show me how to use it, and at least they will profit.

Well I got the Canny collar earlier and i have to say i'm very impressed, Diesel Wasn't trying to get it off and walked perfectly!

Tried it on Kai too, but he wasn't impressed just kept trying to paw it off, he walks quite well though anyway so he doesn't need one

I kept checking as we were out have used it twice now, but it doesn't seem to slip at all and when the lead is loose there's no strain on it at all.

My wee sister is dogsitting when we go on holiday and will be much easier for her as she couldn't walk them together, but with this she will be able to

We've just started using canny collars on the girls. General walking they have been good and the pulling is so much less.

This weekend was the second time we used them in different places with unknown dogs and people etc and to be honest they make it so much easier to manage them.

Only thing I would say is that with Amy the band on the nose digs a little but she has always had the urge to snuffle for truffles when walking so we have to work all the time at keeping her head up. She is better on the canny but I am thinking of padding hers under the nose bit to stop it digging.
Maizie walks beautifully with hers on.
